Childress County 20th Century Veterans Memorial

On November 11, 2005 (Veterans Day) the Childress County 20th Century Veterans Memorial was dedicated. This completion was finalized after a committee formed 5 years ago and made the decision that Childress County needed to erect a memorial to honor those who have served their country. The memorial honors all who have served during the 20th century. A group dilligently worked for 5 years obtaining names of those who have served for our country. This itself proved to be a real task for them as many of the records had been lost due to a fire, but they never gave up. The committee consisted of Gene Currie, Russell Grimes, Irma Custer, Bethene Estes, Hope Bratcher, Lois Stiner, Dr. J.J. Westenburg, Dottie Bettis, Shalor Townzen, Mark Marrs, John Rowell, Mary Jones, Eddie Leary, Judy Johnson and James Barnett. Most importantly the generous donors has made this memorial happen. Over $120,000 was donated to erect the memorial.

On the right side are pictures that were taken during the process of the construction. The first picture is a picture of the center of the memorial showing the Killed in Action service members. Below are some pictures of the engraving and two of the granite pillars after the engraving was done. The top right picture is of a few people looking at the names on the memorial. The last two pictures are of the completed project showing the
front and the back of the memorial. It is believed that this is
the only memorial in Texas that has all veterans in the county listed on the memorial during the 21st Century.
