CHILDRESS COUNTY HERITAGE MUSEUM

WHERE THE PAST NEVER GROWS OLD!

Childress County Heritage Museum was chartered January 12, 1976, in conjunction with the nation`s bicentennial, with the late A.V. McFarland its first president and curator. Its humble beginnings were in the old jail on the courthouse square. It is now at home in the old U S Post Office built in 1935. It was purchased in 1981 by the late Eugene and Janet Norris Smith and donated to the museum board, in memory of their parents, to house the historical artifacts of Childress County, Texas. Doors of the new museum were opened in 1983.
The building received Texas Historical Landmark designation by the Texas Historical Commission in 1991.
The architecture of the museum building is described as "Spanish Colonial Style" featuring the parapet above the main entrance and round arch windows.

The vintage Michie Building, located at the corner of Main Street and Avenue D Northwest, is a 1926 corner service station and automobile sales agency that was preserved in the late 1990`s. The Michie Building became known as Michie
Transportation Museum and is at the present time open on Saturdays through the summer months, special events and by appointment. Michie Transportation Museum is home for many antique vehicles, buggy displays and some railroad displays.

The Museum is located at 210 3rd St. NW and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday or by appointment. Michie Transportation Museum is open by appointment. For information please call 940-937-2261 or send email to childressmuseum@sbcglobal.net
